July 1984 - July 1989I served on a short service commission as a medical officer in the Indian Army medical corps. This was right after my graduation from medical school. I was posted as a medical officer in Military hospital, field ambulance and a base hospital. I worked in the surgery and Orthopedic departments of these hospitals. I passed part 1 of the Diplomate national board of examinations while working here. My basic surgical skills and experience were acquired during these years. I was in independent command of an Advanced dressing station (ADS) and gained experience as a doctor and administrator. I was responsible for planning & provision of medical cover to a brigade in active counter insurgency operations in Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. I did the basic mountaineering course from the Institute of mountain climbing in Darjeeling and treated my fellow participants with high altitude sickness. I have participated in exercises in the remote forward areas of the country and abroad. I have conducted exercises in staging and evacuation of casualties from the battlefield.
